March is a fantastic time to be in Bali. On March 14th this year, the Balinese will welcome in the Saka New Year with 24 hours of complete silence, a one-of-a-kind tradition that is unique to Bali alone.
Also known as “Nyepi”, or the Balinese Day of Silence, the island will be at a complete standstill for one day and one night. Everyone is prohibited from working, driving, or travelling. There won’t be any noise, traffic, or activity anywhere. At night, it is pitch darkness – a fantastic time to stargaze and enjoy the view of the Milky Way.
While lights are allowed indoors, windows and glass doors must be covered at all times. The Balinese have been observing Nyepi for thousands of years: they believe that on this day, by keeping the island dark and quiet, evil spirits will bypass Bali, as it will appear as if nothing and no one is living on the island.
In preparation for Nyepi, the Balinese will be conducting a string of religious ceremonies which begin at least one week before, culminating in the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade that takes place the night before Nyepi. Giant paper effigies bearing the faces and shapes of demons are paraded along the main streets to chase out evil spirits and energies that accumulated on the island from the past year.
Although there won’t be any parades this year due to safety protocols and restrictions, Nyepi is still a fantastic one-of-a-kind cultural experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. It is also a great time to treat yourself to a staycation at The Colony Hotel while learning and experiencing the unique cultural aspects of Nyepi.
Aside from the spiritual aspects of Nyepi, 24-hours of silence and no-activity is a great way to help save Mother Earth. In 2019, the island’s CO2 emissions were reduced by at least 20,000 tons, according to an NGO. Slowing down and relaxing in since for one day will also do wonders for your mental, physical and emotional health as you will feel free from all the stresses of life and immerse yourself in blissful silence for a day.
