Looking to stray away from sweaty nightclubs or shopping malls offering brands you often see back home? Shop like a local! Traditional night markets in Bali act as shopping hubs for locals and souvenir centre for tourists. See where you can find a night market near you during your stay at The Colony Hotel Seminyak.
1. Sanur Market
The Sanur Night Market, locally known as Pasar Tradisional Desa Sanur, is the main fresh market within the area. Spread along Sindhu Beach and near the northern end of Jl. Danau Tamblingan, the market hosts countless vendors occupying most of the parking space. Surrounding kiosks open before sunset, as the market usually becomes quiet after 8pm. At the night market, expect to find vendors selling local food and snacks to cheap souvenirs, such as the famous Bintang tees. The stalls also offer fresh fruit and vegetables and some places sell kitchen utensils, household tools, batik textiles, even flowers for Balinese offerings. Despite its traditional status, the market appears modern and clean.
2. Gianyar Market
Any local will tell you Gianyar Night Market hordes some of the best food in Bali. Accompanied by bright lights and festive crowds along the streets, food stalls offer a traditional atmosphere of outdoor eating and mouthwatering menu like babi guling. You can eat for as cheap as IDR15,000 and the night market is only a 20-minute drive from Ubud.
3. Kumbasari and Badung Market
These two are separate markets often considered as one. This day and night market is opposite one of the biggest temples in Denpasar and the largest centre where locals shop their daily needs. Acting as a hub for clearance goods, the market sells a variety of things from fresh produce to Balinese attire. It runs from noon to midnight.
4. Garlic Lane
Garlic Lane shopping street is located on the narrow side streets off Legian’s main roads, Jalan Sahadewa. You’re free to stroll along and browse from DVD stores, fashion boutiques, to woodcarving galleries, bargain for the sake of your wallets (or pride for that matter). Take home little trinkets for the folks or to spruce up your living room. Open from 8am until 9pm.
5. Taman Sari Market
Seminyak isn’t known to host many local markets, but Taman Sari Market is one of the few popular night markets in Bali. A unique deviation from the high end boutique shops and prestigious dining scenes of the area, this night market serves as an ideal shop for fresh tropical fruits at bargain prices within arm’s reach to villas and resorts. Food carts of all sorts sell ‘bakso’ meatball soup, chicken satay, and other cheap tasty treats.
