Eid al-Fitr is coming to Bali! The Ramadan month is considered the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and is highly anticipated by the majority of Indonesians who are predominantly Muslims.
Also known as the fasting month, this time is a special occasion for Muslims as they refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and conducting any immoral activities. Due to this practice, restaurants in big Indonesian cities such as Jakarta are normally only open after sunset, to cater to Muslims breaking their fast. Most bars and nightlife venues will also be closed. All offices and businesses will also shut down during the 2 days of Eid al-Fitr.
But would Ramadan have any impact on your sunny holiday in Bali? Most likely it won’t, since the Island of Gods is mostly populated by locals practicing the Hindu religion.
What differences will you see during Ramadan in Bali?
Prior to Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim population of Bali will fast for one whole month. Normally, you wouldn’t notice much difference during Ramadan. The only change you may see is Muslim-owned restaurants and warungs that stop operating during the day and only open later, prior to “Buka Puasa”, or when they are about to break their fast.
A lot of hotels and restaurants may offer Ramadan packages highlighting special menus for “iftar” or the meal consumed to break their fast. Expect lots of stalls lined up on the streets offering sweets as well!
How is the nightlife in Bali during Ramadan?
In cities such as Jakarta, alcohol is normally prohibited during the month of Ramadan. If you are lucky, you may find some bars that still serve glasses of beer. Most nightlife venues would also be closed. However, the nightlife in Bali goes unaffected. You can still party as usual at your favorite clubs and bars or drink stylish cocktails at Bali’s beachfront bars.
What about the traffic in Bali during Ramadan?
During the week of Eid al-Fitr, most of the Muslim residents of Bali travel back to their homes to gather and spend time with the family to celebrate the occasion. On the other hand, this long weekend is considered a popular holiday time for Indonesians outside of Bali and many will come here for a vacation. Therefore, be prepared for heavier traffic in areas such as Kuta, Seminyak, and Legian.
