Although the island of gods is generally a safe holiday destination, it’s important to know how to stay safe in Bali to ensure a trouble-free getaway!
As you are unfamiliar with the area, whenever you travel outside of your home country, or even to a city within your country, there’s the possibility of encountering risky situations. Just like traveling to any other tourist destination, you may face typical matters such as traffic jams, pollution, risk of theft, stumbling on illegal drugs, or even the risk of being taken advantage of as a tourist.
If you are planning to visit this tropical paradise, here are some travel tips to keep you safe in Bali.
Commute wisely to stay safe
Areas like Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Ubud are known for their congested roads. Whether you’re a pedestrian or riding a motorbike, always stay alert when commuting. There are no strict traffic rules here, so always stop and look before you cross any streets. Don’t assume vehicles will stop as you cross the roads – chances are they won’t!
Take note also, that although you may have seen a lot of foreigners scooting around Bali with no helmet (and even with their shirts off), it is highly recommended to always wear a helmet and a jacket. This is to ensure that if an accident does occur, you are wearing some form of protection.
Taking care of your belongings
Even though robbery isn’t so much of a problem in high-end resorts and hotels, it’s still best to take extra care of your belongings. Items such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras and jewelry shouldn’t be left lying around. Rather than taking the risk of carrying valuable belongings with you, if your accommodation comes with a safety deposit box, consider putting expensive items in there. Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked when you leave your room.
If you happen to walk around with valuable items, it is best not to display them visibly as you may expose yourself to burglars on the streets.
Stay away from drugs and illegal substances
As a tourist, you might be an easy target to purchase cheap drugs offered to you when walking on the streets. If this happens, instantly stride away. When it comes to drugs, the Indonesian law takes it very seriously and anyone, including tourists, may face the death penalty.
You may have heard of, and wanted to try, Arak, a traditional Balinese liquor. Although it is legal and can easily be found in many bars and restaurants, make sure to obtain it (and any other drinks) from reputable places. There have been cases of alcohol poisoning due to mixing drinks with dangerous substances.
